JOHN COOPER GREEN Musical Director
John was born in Keswick, and after studying with Andrew Seivewright at Carlisle Cathedral, went to the Royal College of Music where amongst his teachers were Herbert Howells, Herbert Sumsion, Nicholas Kynaston and Ralph Downes. His first appointment was as Assistant Organist at Chester Cathedral and Director of Music at the Cathedral Choir School.
As well as giving many organ recitals at Chester he has also played at Bristol,
Canterbury, Carlisle, Norwich, St.Alban's and St.Paul's Cathedrals. Later posts included Organist of the Collegiate Church of St.Mary Stafford and Director of Music at Framlingham College in Suffolk. Whilst there he was appointed the first conductor of the Aldeburgh Chamber Choir. This involved responsibility for many concerts at The Maltings in Snape with the Britten/Pears Orchestra and working with such eminent conductors as Rostropovitch, Philip Ledger, George Malcolm and Stuart Bedford. John also conducted the choir in many concerts, including live broadcasts and played organ continuo at The Maltings.
After ten years at Framlingham he moved in 1990 to Stowe School as Director of Music and conductor of the Buckingham Choral Society. At the school he established a chapel choir of around 100 young singers and instituted an annual choral day for Prep. Schools which was one of the largest in the country regularly attracting between 500 and 600 singers.
John recently retired to his home in Keswick and is active as an organist, accompanist and choral director in the area.
